Wood Parts
In the late 1970s, Inlaid Woodcraft Company pioneered
the development of wood cutting laser equipment. Laser
cutting offers a precise, high-quality alternative
to die cutting, routing or sawing.
In addition to being able to cut wood
veneer, our lasers are capable of cutting wood up
to 1” thick. The ability to laser-cut shapes
out of thicker material offers exciting possibilities.
We can laser-cut wood grates, fretwork, piano music
desks, chair backs, decorative furniture brackets
and many other miscellaneous wood products.

Marquetry...Defined
Marquetry can best be described as "the art of painting with wood". Essentially, marquetry is a type of woodworking that involves covering a substrate with inlaid wood veneers to form decorative patterns, designs and pictures. It can be found on wooden boxes, chests, clocks, coffee tables, dining tables, game tables, desks, mirror frames and other furniture. Marquetry is also used to enhance the beauty of floors, walls and ceiling panels.
A Brief History of how Marquetry designs came to be
The Art of marquetry designs, widely believed to have originated in Italy during the Roman Empire, spread rapidly throughout Italy and Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries. French and Italian artisans used marquetry extensively to create incredibly ornate furnishings for the French Royalty during the Renaissance era. Floral designs were especially popular during this period, and can still be seen in antique cabinets and furnishings from that period.
At the end of the 17th century, English cabinetmakers began creating furniture using a new style of marquetry, blending influences from French, Flemish, Dutch and Spanish cabinetmakers. Eventually, the Art of marquetry found its way to America, with numerous immigrant cabinetmakers taking root in Boston. These early American cabinetmakers borrowed mostly from the English and Colonial styles. Throughout its history, marquetry artisans have continually developed new tools and techniques for creating marquetry. Historically, some more widely used methods include Boulle, Classic, Geometric (also known as Parquetry) and Block marquetry.
How Marquetry Designs are Made
Marquetry involves cutting wooden veneers with a laser, knife, scroll saw or other sharp instrument. These pieces are then artistically assembled with other pieces of wood to create a picture, pattern, or design. Craftsmen typically use supplies such as sand paper, PVA glue and varnish; it depends on what they plan to do with the finished work. For hobbyist and enthusiasts, the right tutorial can make it easy to create an inlaid tray, picture frame, jewelry box, or even a custom guitar.
